A secondary headache can be the result of a head injury, brain tumor, or bacterial infection such as meningitis.

The 4 Most Common Types of Headaches

Tension headaches are considered the most common headache, with 20% of the population experiencing one at some point in their life. A tension headache is described as pain or heavy “ache” felt on both sides of the head, including the back of the head and neck. Tension headaches can become chronic, generally are triggered by poor posture, or clenching the jaw during stress or when feeling anxious.

Cluster headaches bring excruciating pain to one side of the head only, and referred to as the “suicide” headache. Cluster headaches experienced more often by men than women, generally last approximately 15 minutes to 3 hours. These headaches can strike several times during a single day, last for a period of time, and then disappear for months or even years before returning. Triggers associated with cluster headaches are usually self induced by consumption of alcohol, smoking cigarettes, or being in high altitudes.

Migraines are severe headaches, occurring more often in women than men and may be due to hormonal fluctuations women experience throughout their life. People who suffer with migraines often have a family member who has suffered from them too. Sensitivity to light or nausea may occur and some individuals feel an “aura”, warning a migraine is about to develop. Triggers for migraine headache include weather changes, eating or sleeping changes, and chronic stress.

Sinus headaches are often times mistaken for a migraine as symptoms of each are similar. Nasal congestion, sinus pressure, and watering eyes are present in both types of headaches, however, the nasal discharge is different. Migraines can produce a clear nasal discharge or watery eyes during the headache. Nasal discharge caused by a sinus headache is green in color and related to infection within the body. Sinus headaches lack light sensitivity or nausea which is experienced with a migraine headache. Treating the infection will relieve this type of headache.

Other Types of Headaches

People suffer from some less common headaches as well. Less common types of headache are listed below.

Dental headaches are caused by grinding of teeth during the night, or temporomandibular joint disease(TMJ), both affecting the joints that connect the jaw to the skull.

Rebound headaches are the result of “overusing” over the counter medications such as pain relievers or nasal sprays. Nasal sprays make blood vessels in the nose constrict to clear the nasal passage. Nasal spray used more than 5 days in a row may create a tolerance and needing more spray to alleviate symptoms. Something similar happens with pain relievers. Taking Motrin, Aspirin, Tylenol or other pain medications regularly cause pain receptors to overreact when the medication is not present in the body. This creates a yo-yo effect to occur.

Caffeine headaches occur when routine intake of caffeine is followed by an absence of caffeine. The body has become reliant on the caffeine to constrict the blood vessels and provide superficial energy. The amount of caffeine taken routinely directly affects how severe the withdrawal (headaches) will be. Relieving a caffeine headache can be done by continuing routine amounts of caffeine each day or completely abstaining from caffeine. Infrequent caffeine usually does not cause headaches to occur.

Brain Freeze headaches occur after ingesting cold foods such as ice cream, milk shakes, frozen pops, or ice. These headaches are believed to be caused by the cold sensation felt on the roof of the mouth, increasing blood flow to the arteries that surround the brain. Sometimes drinking warm water can help relieve brain freeze more rapidly.

Serious (Secondary Type) headaches have a sudden onset and feel explosive in nature. This headache occurs and is associated with fever or extremely high blood pressure. These can also be caused by a sudden blow to the head by an object or brain trauma during an accident. Vision can be disturbed, impairment of speech, dizziness, stiff neck or sudden muscle weakness on one side of the body may occur. Hospital treatment is a must in types of headaches.
